Square Kilometre Array, South Africa, Selects Enterprise Informatics’ eB for Configuration Management
SAN DIEGO, CA (PR Web) January 27, 2010 -- Enterprise Informatics, a leading provider of enterprise management software solutions and DocQnet Systems International, South African Distributor of eB, has announced that SKA South Africa has selected eB as their Configuration Management System (CMS) for the SKA-SA project. eB, Enterprise Informatics’ enterprise information management solution, will be used by the various teams on the project to control the configuration of hardware, software and related documents during the various phases, i.e. Development, Production and Operational Deployment (including operations and support).
The SKA SA Project Office is constructing the MeerKAT radio telescope at Carnarvon in the Northern Cape. The MeerKAT will be among the largest and most powerful telescopes in the world. The project includes the establishment of a Greenfield site (an Astronomy Reserve) near Carnarvon and the construction of the infrastructure elements required to operate radio telescopes in the reserve; including roads, power, reticulation of power and optical fibre, and links to the national optical fibre network.
The first phase of MeerKAT, KAT 7, will consist of 7 x 12m dishes that will be operational by mid-2010 and MeerKAT, which will consist of up to 80 dishes, by 2013.
MeerKAT will develop technologies appropriate to the SKA, including the use of composite, one-piece reflectors, single-pixel wideband receivers, low-cost, high-reliability cryogenic systems, and reconfigurable digital processing systems. When completed, the SKA will be the most powerful radio telescope in the world.
“DocQnet is thrilled at this opportunity to play a major role in the one of the most exciting scientific projects in the world today,” explains Frederik Verhoef, DocQnet’s Director, Technology. ”Furthermore, we are proud to be involved in such a landmark project for South Africa.” eB will be implemented as a distributed configuration management system over three sites, including Johannesburg, Cape Town and at the MeerKAT site near Carnarvon in the Karoo, ensuring that complete design information is available and accurate at all locations over the duration of the project.
